For us, September always means: back to Lyceum Ypenburg! Every year, it's a joy to welcome the new class of students during their orientation, but this year was extra special. With four VWO 50+ students – a new group, new faces – the focus was on connection.

Basketball introduction Lyceum Ypenburg: outside the comfort zone, growing together

Four VWO students are known for their somewhat introverted nature, but that's precisely what makes it so rewarding to take on the challenge together. Together with coach Noël, who has an additional role with the Eagles this year on behalf of the Basketball with Impact Foundation, we challenged the students to go just that little bit further outside their comfort zone. Don't force it, invite it – so everyone feels safe to participate.

Basketball introduction Lyceum Ypenburg: creativity, collaboration and real conversations

As always, we started with a short demo so everyone knew what to expect. This year, the emphasis was on creative relays, collaboration, communication, and fair play. Not just running, but also thinking together, working carefully, and truly getting to know each other. The best moment? At the end of the class, after almost two hours, we saw even the quietest students leave with big smiles and genuine conversations.

A huge thank you to Pieter Nesti and Maaike – the consistently positive PE teachers at Lyceum Ypenburg – for their trust and the opportunity to do this year after year. It's always special to see how sports and basketball contribute to a good start and genuine connection in the classroom.
