From phone call to basketball party

Sometimes you get those calls that you just want to say "yes" to. Two and a half weeks beforehand, a father called asking if we could surprise his son (17!) with a real basketball party at their boxing gym, where they play 3x3 every Sunday. And so, Showcase Basketball rolled into Oud-Beijerland—with a mission: two hours of creativity, fun, and next-level energy.

The click was instant (halftime flashbacks)

When they arrived, the guys looked a bit shocked at first... and then it all clicked. A few guys played for BOB and Binnenland and recognized me from various Dutch team halftime shows. That moment is golden: you immediately feel confidence, curiosity, and that "okay, what are we going to do?" vibe. Plug in the Boxing Company Sonos system and go.

Deluxe warm-up: speed ladders + ball control

And this was really great: eight speed ladders were already neatly sprayed and painted on the floor. So we could immediately warm up with ball-hand-eye coordination, footwork, and speed. I love it when a venue invites you to get creative—then you know: this is going to be one for the books.

Attribute parade: from speedballs to blaze pds

Of course, I brought half a toy store with me again: silly bouncers, heavy-weighted speed balls, defensive hands, clubs, blaze pods, shooting spots, and a pile of different balls. We did exercises that they could immediately apply to their own practices or free play sessions. And yes: their little brother joined in too—and believe me, he was unstoppable.

Shooting challenge: choices, communication, chasing points

Then we moved on to a shooting challenge where it wasn't just about hitting the target, but about teamwork, communication, quick rebounding, and making smart decisions under pressure. You saw them switch gears: from "I'll fix this" to "Okay, we have to figure this out together." That's precisely where sports become magical.

Course Chaos (the good way)

The energy remained high, so we built a course with various stations: defending in the "pressure circle" (one minute of hands trying to knock the ball away), dribbling with speed balls, reaction dribbling with a clear view between the blaze spots, 1-on-1 with extra clubs (nice and tricky), practicing archery, and reaction shots. Full throttle, lots of laughter, and the occasional look of "how?!"

Break + mini-show: take a look at what practicing often does

When the fatigue started to kick in, it was time for a short break. And as promised: I gave a little show. Not to "flex," but to show what's possible when you practice often and enjoy the process.

Closing the day the way it should be: 3x3, cake and a big smile

They still wanted to play. Initially, they thought it would be one-on-one, but with 12 players, it naturally became three-on-three. Super enthusiastic, great atmosphere, and exactly that Sunday energy you can rely on for the rest of the week. Afterward, cake, high fives, and the best part: the boys even helped carry all the stuff back to the transporter. Everyone went home with a big smile—including me.
