LO2 & MDT Thorbecke Talent School

The kick-off for the MDT Streetwise trajectory at Thorbecke Talent School Rotterdam And now it's time for the follow-up lessons. These PE2 & MDT lessons at Thorbecke Talent School are designed to delve deeper into the material and core objectives of PE2 & BSM and to integrate movement and sports into society and education. We want to connect with the PE2 lessons, which is important for this school.

Preparation is key

I discussed the challenges facing the MAVO classes beforehand with Randy, the PE department chair, and Edward van Gils, the soccer player who also attended the opening. These included group dynamics and behavior. Today, the students have the theoretical part of PE2, but because of the nice weather, we decided to go outside for a more interactive approach.

The young people arrive enthusiastically at the basketball and soccer courts. We begin with introductions. Because we believe vulnerability is the best way to motivate young people to make their own choices, Edward and I share our personal stories. And they make an impression.

Then we begin an activity about making choices. We encourage the young people to consider the impact their responses have on others. Depending on their answers to various statements, they have to shift to one side or the other. This leads to interesting conversations, without labeling or judging. Throughout the process, I ask the young people to reflect on themselves and the things they say to each other, so they understand that impulsive remarks don't always go down well in a group.

Discussion = involvement

After these discussions, we split the group in two. I head to the basketball court with my group. From the perspective of LO2 and LSR, I ask who knows a fun game and is willing to present it. One boy takes the initiative and gradually realizes it's not as easy as it seems. We help him get started, asking him, for example, how he can make it interesting so everyone gets involved again. Ultimately, we decide to work with multiple balls and add push-ups to the game.

Something beautiful also happens with the second group. There are a few roosters who, you know in advance, need some extra attention and life lessons. I ask them what makes a lesson enjoyable. They say they value freedom and fun. Two boys want to demonstrate something, but they can't reach an agreement because they both want to get their way. They have exactly one minute to work it out together, otherwise, two others will be chosen. It's wonderful to see how they embrace their responsibility and quickly develop a collaborative spirit.

Differentiation and connection

We finally play the push-up game. A quieter boy refuses to do the push-ups, which leads to nasty remarks from the other boys. It's a good moment for an important life lesson. I say, "Guys, two important points: One, strong people help each other. They don't tear each other down, but rather lift each other up. And two, the easiest thing to do when something doesn't go your way is to send someone away. That happens often enough in your class, and you don't like it either. So sending him away now isn't a solution. Let's find a solution together." The boy has to do 15 push-ups, and there are fifteen of us, so we agree that everyone will do one. That way, we're a team and share responsibility by thinking in terms of possibilities and solutions. This way, the group dynamic is restored in a positive way, and the day is... Thorbecke Talent School Rotterdam a valuable experience for everyone.
