Young people grow through sports and take responsibility

March 2025 was marked by the MDT Final Event at the Thorbecke Talent School. After months of workshops and preparation, the young people from 3MAVO were able to show what they had learned. The final event was more than a sports day; it was an opportunity for these young people to grow in self-confidence, responsibility, and collaboration. Showcase Basketball, Kershawn, and Edward from Streetkings were there to guide and support this process. Additionally, our partner in crime, Bart Kleijweg from Buurtlab, was present to administer the LSR 1 diploma.

First group: indoor soccer players take the lead

The first group to organize their final event consisted of a team of twelve indoor soccer players. These fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds were tasked with organizing a sports day for second-year MAVO students. With a script in hand and plenty of enthusiasm, they got to work. Two weeks before the event, they visited the venue to go over everything, from the materials to the setup. It was wonderful to see how some young people took the lead, while others grew into their roles through the responsibility they were given.

On the day itself, five of the twelve young people were ready early to help with the preparations. They took care of the sound system, balls, scoreboards, and even some snacks and water for the participants. During the event, five-on-five was played, with an exciting final as the highlight. The blue team ultimately won after a nail-biting sudden death round. This was not only a sporting victory but also a moment where the young people showed how they embraced responsibility and leadership.

Second group: multidisciplinary sports event

Another group organized a multidisciplinary sports event at the Beilo School. These five young people worked closely with PE teachers and sent the school a detailed schedule in advance. The program included creative activities like bubble football, Jenga, tug-of-war, and basketball. Years 6, 7, and 8 of the BIJLO School visibly enjoyed the varied games. The collaboration between MAVO students and BSM (Exercise, Sports, and Society) students made for an energetic and successful day.

A special moment was the growth of Y, a dancer who doubted her suitability for the LSR certificate. By motivating her and offering her perspective, we saw her blossom. She spontaneously came up with new games, enthusiastically mentored young people, and proved to be a natural at organizing. Unbeknownst to her, she was being assessed for her LSR1 diploma, and at the end of the day, we surprised her with the news that she had passed. Her smile and enthusiasm were priceless.

A day full of meaning and growth

The MDT Final Event was a wonderful example of how young people can grow when given responsibility and challenged consistently and systematically. From organizing a sports day to mentoring their peers, these young people truly showed what they're capable of. It was an honor to be part of their journey and to see them achieve not only athletic but also personal victories.
