Team NL halftime show
The European Championship qualifiers, the Netherlands versus Great Britain, a thrilling match, and a home game in a sold-out Sportcampus Den Haag. It's always a special place for me, because performing in my own city feels like coming home.
It's been a while since I was at a international match present was. At the previous international match of the women on February 9 in Almere, Just Liza, my protégé, played a halftime show for the women's team. Now it was my turn, and what an honor to perform in a packed stadium again. The atmosphere was electric from the start, thanks in part to the arcade machine we'd brought along. Always a crowd-pleaser and a guaranteed hit.
The preparations went smoothly. The NBB team welcomed us with open arms again, and it was great to see familiar faces. Greet Spetter, one of the most enthusiastic volunteers I know, greeted us with her signature energy. Logan, a boy I know from my school workshops, was also there with his father, who took care of the lighting and sound. It's those personal connections that make such days extra special.
During the sound check, I was able to test the brand-new floor, originally from the Olympic Games. It was an honor to be one of the first to stand on it. After some final adjustments—white or black suit? It was black—and a quick bite at the catering crew, it was time to pick up my family. My wife and daughters were there, which made the day even more special for me. My oldest daughter, just back from her eighth-grade camp, loved seeing the locker room and players up close, as she's just started playing basketball. This was a day she'll never forget, especially for her.
When the moment arrived, everything was ready. The cheerleaders helped with the final details, and the music was pumping. Vincent Krieger, the best MC in the Netherlands, announced me, and to the applause of a packed house, I ran onto the field. Mind blank, completely in the zone, and enjoying myself. That's what it's all about.
After the show, as always, I was able to throw some giveaway balls into the crowd and delight children by spinning the ball on their fingers. During the third quarter, I was with my family, where I ran into children I knew from basketball camps. A small skills challenge spontaneously arose – who could show the best tricks? The winner got a mini ball, just because. It's those little moments that make all the difference.
At the end of the day, my daughters collected autographs from the players. It was surreal for her to see other children wanting her father's autograph. She and her teammate, who was also there, took pictures and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Despite the Netherlands' loss, it was an exciting match and a wonderful day.
What struck me is how Dutch basketball is increasingly taking on an American vibe. From courtside seats to famous DJs and a sold-out stadium – it feels like a step in the right direction for the sport in our country, and I'm happy to contribute. Dutch Basketball !
